On September 18-19, our Tango Project partners from CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies), participated in the Forum on Philosophy of Engineering and Technology (fPET), hosted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

During the forum, our partners had the opportunity to present ongoing work on three significant initiatives: our project, TANGO, the AI CODE Project, and NeuroClima. These projects are centred on developing a mixed-method assessment framework for the ethical, legal, social, and economic (ELSE) impacts of European AI projects.

The primary goal in attending fPET was to gather feedback on whether the ELSA/ELSI/ELSE research paradigm could benefit from more practical guidance. While the field is flourishing, it’s clear that approaches to ELSA/ELSI/ELSE vary widely, which has both its benefits and challenges. On one hand, tailoring research to the specific needs of a project ensures relevance; however, it also leads to varied outputs, potential inefficiencies, and a lack of comparability between studies—making it harder to inform broader innovation policies.

At Tango Project, we are committed to continuing our work on refining a practical framework that will enhance the ELSE approach without standardizing it. This will help foster clearer guidelines, encourage resource efficiency, and improve cross-project comparability, ultimately supporting more effective AI project outcomes.
