On March 24, 2025, the TANGO project proudly hosted the second edition of the Adaptive XAI: Towards Intelligent Interfaces for Tailored AI Explanations workshop in Cagliari, Sardinia, as part of the IUI 2025 conference.

This year’s workshop continued to build momentum around adaptive, human-centred approaches to explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). With participation from a diverse group of researchers, designers, and technologists, the event explored how AI systems can deliver tailored, context-sensitive explanations that resonate with users’ needs, preferences, and cognitive states.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Personalized XAI Interfaces: Innovative approaches to adapting AI explanations based on evolving user needs and contexts.

  • Multimodal and Immersive Interaction: Cutting-edge work on new modalities for AI-human interaction, including visual languages and mixed-reality environments.

  • Ethical Dimensions: Discussions on transparency, user autonomy, and mitigating automation bias in adaptive XAI systems.

  • Application Domains: Integration of XAI in sectors like healthcare, finance, and autonomous systems.

  • LLMs and Interactive Learning: Insights into the potential and limits of large language models for real-time, user-in-the-loop explanations.

The workshop received a strong number of high-quality submissions, and we congratulate all authors whose papers were accepted. Selected contributions will be invited to submit extended versions to a forthcoming special issue on Hybrid Human-AI Systems.

Organising Team:
Tommaso Turchi (University of Pisa)
Alessio Malizia (University of Pisa)
Fabio Paternò (CNR-ISTI)
Simone Borsci (University of Twente)
Alan Chamberlain (University of Nottingham)
Andrew Fish (University of Liverpool)

We extend our gratitude to the Future Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) programme and additional supporters including the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Hub, RAI UK, and the Italian MUR PRIN 2022 project on explainable smart homes. Special thanks also to Microsoft for supporting the peer-review process via the Microsoft CMT platform.

The Adaptive XAI workshop exemplifies TANGO’s mission: fostering responsible, transparent, and human-centered AI systems. We look forward to continuing this important conversation in future editions.
