We’re thrilled to share the highlights from the second HLDM Workshop, which took place on September 9, 2024, in the beautiful city of Vilnius, Lithuania, as part of the ECMLPKDD series.

With the Workshop, chaired by TANGO Project Coordinator Associate Prof. Andrea Passerini, Associate Prof. Giovanna Varni, Burcu Sayin of Università di Trento, and partners: Associate Prof. Anna Monreale of Università di Pisa, Prof. Novi Quadrianto of University of Sussex and Artur Bogucki of CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies). This event brought together leading experts, researchers, and innovators to explore the future of hybrid human-machine systems, a key area in advancing human-cantered AI. 

Workshop Highlights:

Keynotes from Thought Leaders: We heard inspiring talks from Prof. Catholijn M. Jonker on hybrid intelligence in negotiation, Prof. Nick Chater of our partner organisation University of Warwick on the nuances of explainability, Prof. Nuria Oliver on biases in algorithms, and Prof. Zeynep Akata on explainability in the era of multimodal LLMs.

Innovative Research Presentations: From causal frameworks and interactive explainability to interpretable clustering, the sessions showcased cutting-edge work on integrating human judgment with AI for better decision-making.

Engaging Discussions: The interactive sessions and poster spotlights facilitated rich discussions around ethics, legal considerations, and the cognitive aspects of AI, ensuring trustworthy and effective hybrid systems.
Why It Matters: Machine learning and decision-making are increasingly intertwined, and our understanding of their synergy is just beginning. HLDM’24 provided an invaluable platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, with a shared goal: designing hybrid systems that empower, rather than replace, human decision-makers.
