WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION OF THE TANGO NEWSLETTER!

This newsletter will be published on a quarterly basis and aims to provide a quick overview of developments relating to the TANGO project and relevant human-centric AI systems updates that occurred within the last quarter.

This edition highlights the key project activities, such as the first Cluster meeting that took place on June 20th. It also presents the events, publications, and networking activities that involved the TANGO partners.

The TANGO project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101120763.

TANGO News updates

The TANGO Project held its first Cluster meeting (online), on Thursday, June 20th, 2024.

The meeting was chaired by Carr Communications, TANGO’s dissemination and communication manager. Four projects, funded under the same HORIZON call (HORIZON-CL4-2022-HUMAN-02) from all over Europe attended the call, representing the 4 partner organisations: AI4REALNET, HumAIne, PEER AI and THEMIS 5.0.

The call involved general introductions of the projects and a brainstorming for collaboration ideas. Including brainstorming for a workshop proposal for ADR Forum, encompassing a wide range of topics at the intersection of AI, Data, and Robotics.

We look forward to continuing collaborating closely with all new cluster partners virtually and advancing the innovations of the cluster.

TANGO Partner’s updates

Swansea University, in collaboration with The University of Pisa organized a workshop at the AVI conference in Genoa in June 2024. AVI, an internationally recognized biennial Italian conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and novel visual interfaces, hosted the workshop titled “Synergy,” uniting researchers exploring “Designing and Building Hybrid Human-AI Systems.” More details can be found at https://synergy.trx.li. Swansea University has also submitted two papers for this workshop.

In this workshop, the organizers brought together researchers working in, or intending to work in, this new and rich area. Experts with experience in designing intelligent systems, working on synergistic systems using non-AI technology, understanding human-human collaboration, and those simply interested and excited by the potential opportunities for radically new interactions gathered for the event.

The participants had the opportunity to exchange innovative ideas, opening new perspectives and insights for our future work together.

Swansea University hosted also a two-day event in May, funded by the Morgan Advanced Studies Institute and supported by Tango, to discuss regulating AI in healthcare. Experts from various fields, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders gathered to explore AI usage in a range of healthcare contexts, and consider the different theoretical frameworks, issues, interests, perspectives, consequences and impacts that arise when AI tools are employed. Different regulatory approaches (sectors specific vs rules-based) and the ways how to engage the stakeholders in formulating how to equip society to appropriately exploit AI tools in healthcare, while maintaining a vigilant guard against falling prey to unsafe, biased or inappropriate technology or power imbalances, were discussed.

TANGO Publications

Our project partners have been working on publishing articles on relevant topic linked to our research in TANGO. Specifically, in the last months they have published:

  • Giovanni De Toni, Paolo Viappiani, Stefano Teso, Bruno Lepri, Andrea Passerini (UNITN, FBK), Personalized Algorithmic Recourse with Preference Elicitation Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR)

The article is available online at: https://openreview.net/pdf?id=8sg2I9zXgO

  • Sydney Levine, Nick Chater, Joshua Tenenbaum & Fiery Cushman (University of Warwick), Resource-rational contractualism: A triple theory of moral cognition, Behavioural and Brain Sciences (Target Article)

In preparation

ECML PKDD 2024

Several TANGO partners will be participating at ECML PKDD 2024 in Vilnius, Lithuania, where they will organize the second workshop on Hybrid Human-Machine Learning and Decision Making, on September 9. It will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise to explore effective hybrid machine learning and decision making, including approaches that explicitly consider the human-in-the-loop and the downstream goals of the human-machine system, decision making strategies and HCI principles that promote rich and diverse interactions between humans and machines. Additionally, cognitive and legal aspects will be considered to identify potential pitfalls and ensure that trustworthy and ethical hybrid decision-making systems are developed.

The call for papers is now closed, but keep following our space to read updates from the workshop in September.

Find more information on the workshop here: https://sml.disi.unitn.it/hldm24.html

Discovery Science 2024

Our partners in Pisa are organizing Discovery Science 2024, a conference that provides an open forum for intensive discussions and exchange of new ideas among researchers working in the area of Discovery Science. The conference, which will take place in Pisa, Italy, from 14 to 16 October, focuses on the use of Artificial Intelligence methods in science, and its scope includes the development and analysis of methods for discovering scientific knowledge, coming from machine learning, data mining, intelligent data analysis, and big data analytics, as well as their application in various domains.

The call for papers is now closed, but keep following our space to read updates from the workshop in October.
