TANGO News updates

The Tango Project held its first-ever General Meeting (Online), on Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday 23rd, 2024.

The meeting was co-chaired by Andrea Passerini and Ronald Chenú Abente Acosta of University of Trento, TANGO’s project coordinator. Thirty-nine project members from all over Europe attended the virtual event, representing the 22 partner organisations. We have welcomed to the project’s team Federica Giovanella as the TANGO Ethics Advisor.

The sessions involved in-depth discussions about TANGO’s progress to date and plans for what is to come as the project matures. Presentations were given across all aspects of the project, including technical specifications, ethical and legal requirements of the research, upcoming events and workshops, and our case studies.

We look forward to continuing collaborating closely with all partners virtually and advancing the innovations of the project.

TANGO Partner’s updates

Tango researchers from Swansea University, in collaboration with colleagues from The University of Pisa, are engaged in pivotal work packages within the Tango project. Their initial focus includes organizing a workshop at the AVI conference in Genoa in June 2024. AVI, an internationally recognized biennial Italian conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and novel visual interfaces, will host the workshop titled “Synergy,” uniting researchers exploring “Designing and Building Hybrid Human-AI Systems.” More details can be found at https://synergy.trx.li. Swansea University has also submitted two papers for this workshop.

Also, Swansea University is hosting a two-day event in May, funded by the Morgan Advanced Studies Institute and supported by Tango, to discuss regulating AI in healthcare. Experts from various fields, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders will gather to prioritize the needs of clinicians and patients. This event provides a timely platform for informed debate amid the current ambiguity surrounding AI regulations.

TANGO Publications

Our project partner, SHARE Foundation, has shared with us their recent study on Biometric Surveillance around the World, published in December 2023. It is one of the most comprehensive studies of advanced biometric systems, technology that underpins them and national legal frameworks regulating their use across the world, Beyond the Face: Biometrics and Society (SHARE Foundation, 2023) offers a current snapshot of the global state of biometric surveillance. The publication helps readers from various fields of interest better understand what biometric mass surveillance is, why we should care, and what can give us hope in the face of powerful state and private actors deploying these intrusive technologies.

Stay tuned about developments regarding the transposition of the AI Act in terms of biometric surveillance in your countries, and don’t hesitate to reach out to SHARE Foundation for more details.

TANGO Events

In April 17-19th, our partner U-Hopper has organized the first TANGO Codecamp in Castelldefels, Barcelona, where the participants have dived deep into a series of meetings, challenges, and training sessions. The participants have also had the opportunity to meet industry experts and exchange innovative ideas, opening new perspectives and insights for our future work together. There has been plenty of space for lighter moments, as you can see in the pictures below! By learning and having fun, the Codecamp has established a collaboration among its participants that will continue in the next TANGO activities. Keep following this space to see what comes next!
